Internship Technology & Innovation - 2D-GC development

Internship - Technology and Innovation (T&I) - Identification and Speciation of Hydrocarbons based on Comprehensive GC

Chromatographic techniques are well established for the separation, identification and quantification of compounds in complex mixtures. However, modern materials are highly complex and conventional one-dimensional techniques are not able to fully resolve sample components.
Comprehensive two-dimensional GC is a powerful separation technique and one of the fastest growing areas in analytical chemistry that can be used to separate complex mixtures (Fig. 1). The analytical department at SABIC is building expertise in advanced chromatography with mass spectrometry and/or other detection modes to analyse complex polymers and chemicals.

DEPARTMENT

SABIC is a global leader in diversified chemicals with operations in more than 50 countries and over 35,000 employees worldwide.

The Analytical Technology team (>20 FTEs) is part of the SABIC Corporate Technology and Innovation (T&I) organization and provides analytical characterization expertise to support technology programs across Strategic Business Units such as PETCHEM and SPECIALTIES.
The chemical characterization laboratories are well equipped with an extensive array of modern analytical techniques in the area of advanced chromatography, spectroscopy, elemental analysis, morphology and microscopy.

At SABIC we attract diverse talents and develop their leadership and technical skills. We are currently looking for motivated and independent students for a 6 - 12 months' internship in Bergen op Zoom (The Netherlands) site with a starting date from September 2024.
The intern will have the unique opportunity to use a state-of-the art equipment and to work closely with SABIC technologists as a member of the analytical technology team to support our R&D efforts towards the development of new sustainable materials.

JOB PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 •  This internship project will focus on developing testing methodologies for analysing a wide range of hydrocarbons by using authentic standards and SABIC materials. GC×GC fitted to multiple ion-sources (EI, PI, FI, CI) will be available for confirming the identity of the molecules. Further, the GC-based test methods will be optimized for both data quality parameters and run time.
 •  Application of new data processing techniques and building of compound databases may also be required
 •  This internship requires hands on laboratory work involving a variety of chromatography and mass spectrometry tools. Candidate will develop experience in validating methods for quantitative/qualitative analysis with advanced comprehensive chromatographic (GC×GC) based separation technique.
 •  In addition, the intern will develop an expert level of knowledge on interpretation of chromatographic data based upon a variety of detection modes during this internship project.
 •  The duration of the internship is up to 6-12 months starting in September 2024.

REQUIREMENTS
 •  MBO-HBO - Bachelor and/or Master and/or Technical Degree Equivalent - Science(s)/Chemistry and/or related field
 •  Must currently be a student at Registered Educational Establishment (Hogeschool/University) in The Netherlands and willing to work on-site Bergen op Zoom
 •  Knowledge of Office, Word, Excel etc
 •  Hands on person with willingness to work in Multi Cultural Environment
 •  Strong analytical and problem solving skills
 •  Flexible, creative and independent
 •  Good laboratory skills with strong Chemistry background
 •  Knowledge of chromatography and mass spectrometry
 •  Good interpersonal skills
 •  Ability to organize, prioritize and handle multiple projects simultaneously
 •  Good verbal and written English communication skills

The Location of this internship is Bergen op Zoom, The Netherlands.
